Under "surfning" råkade jag hamna på Finlands Stenografförbunds hemsida. Jag ville bara skriva några rader för att tala om hur bra och informativ jag tycker att den är. Jag vet inte om det är du som är webmaster, annars får du väl vidarebefordra min positiva reaktion till den som är ansvarig.

Själv kallar jag mig "husbehovsstenograf", min genomsnittshastighet vid träning brukar ligga kring 150 stavelser, men jag jobbar på att höja den. Annars använder jag stenografin mest som anteckningsskrift under mina doktorandstudier och mitt arbete vid Institutionen för nordiska språk vid universitetet här i stan. Så är jag förstås medlem i Melinska Stenografförbundet och i Stenografföreningen i Stockholm. Jag är också med i den grupp som ska förbereda vårt stenografförbunds hemsida på Internet. Vi har kommit långt i vårt arbete (sidan är i princip färdig att läggas ut på

nätet), men ni är uppenbarligen steget före. Det var ju försmädligt att ni finländare alltid ska vara först (inte bara med EMU, alltså)!

Thank you very much for your reply. I have followed your suggestion and taken a look at the Finnish site as well. I am impressed. Although I barely speak a word of Finnish, it's very interesting to see what you are trying to do.

The description of the system gives you quite a good (though brief) impression of how the Nevanlinna system works (we are planning to include a similar description of the Melin system on our site). I had never seen that Finnish system described before - I had only seen descriptions of Fabian Fabritius's Finnish shorthand system and of Nordenswan's adaptation of Melin into Finnish (I don't believe that anyone uses those systems anymore). It's not difficult to see that it's based on Gabelsberger, though. It's fascinating to see how a shorthand system reflects the phonemic structure of a language. Comparing Swedish and Finnish is particularly interesting in that respect, e.g. the use of Gabelsberger's B to represent P in Finnish et.c.

Also by clicking "Lyhentämisnäytteet" you get a very interesting site. There you have the possibility to see the same text written in three different levels. This is also something that is very useful for a person who wants to get to know the system. Are you planning to include information on nonFinnish systems (e.g. Melin) as well?

I have asked Lars Lingvall, our future webmaster, to check out your site. Don't worry, we won't "steal" any of your good ideas (our website will be something completely different), just use it to get some inspiration in our efforts to promote shorthand on the Internet.

Again: good luck with your website. I'll make it a habit to check out any changes on it regularly.
